my strat shows great results in sim but im worried it wont translate to live. how accurate is the sim engine?

EvolvingTraders includes a built-in simulation account and simulated market data, so you can test strategies without risking real money. It's a great way to evaluate performance before going live.

been running same strat in sim and live for 3 months, results within 2%. pretty accurate tbh. just account for commission in sim settings

what time period do you guys use for backtesting? ive been using 6 months but wondering if thats enough
Alex Chen2026-07-19
depends on strategy. for trend following id do at least 2 years to capture multiple cycles. for scalping 6 months is fine. key is include both trending and ranging periods

i do 3 years initial then out-of-sample on latest 6 months. if performance holds across both im confident to go live

backtest says 300% return but max drawdown is 45%. is that normal or should i scrap the strat?
Dave Reynolds2026-07-20
45% drawdown is brutal man. one bad trade could wipe you. id aim for under 20% at least. check if ur using proper position sizing
Marcus Williams2026-07-20
that drawdown is scary. try lowering ur risk per trade. my rule is max 2% per trade, keeps drawdown manageable

i want to backtest on forex data but i dont have historical data. does the sim come with forex data or do i gotta find it myself?
Support2026-07-20
The simulation account provides simulated market data for testing. For backtesting with specific historical data, you would need your own data source connected through your broker.

i use dukascopy historical data. free and covers forex going back years. import it in csv format works fine
